Guidance for Business Owners and Managers as the Presidential Election Approaches

As the next Presidential Election approaches, political discussions are bound to find their way into the workplace.  While these conversations can foster engagement, if left unchecked, they may create tension, lower productivity, or even damage working relationships.  For business owners and managers, the challenge is to create an environment where employees feel comfortable expressing themselves, while maintaining focus on work and respect for diverse viewpoints.

Here are three key strategies to help guide political talk in a professional manner:

1. Establish a Respectful Communication Policy

The first step in preventing workplace tensions is creating a clear communication policy that sets expectations for all employees.  Encourage a culture of civility, inclusivity, and professionalism.  This policy should cover how political discussions are handled at work and extend to social media platforms associated with the business, where political posts could unintentionally reflect on the company.

Employees should understand that while they are free to have their own opinions, sensitive discussions—especially those involving politics—must remain respectful. Emphasizing professionalism in conversations can help reduce conflicts.

2. Train Employees How to Exit Uncomfortable Conversations

Not everyone feels comfortable discussing politics in the workplace, and it’s crucial to give employees the tools to politely steer conversations away from potentially divisive topics.  One effective strategy is role-playing scenarios where employees practice diffusing political conversations.

Encourage employees to use a simple, respectful response like, “I don’t discuss politics at work. Let’s change the subject.”  Following this up with a shift to a positive or neutral topic can help keep the conversation productive.

3. Address Conflicts Proactively

Even with policies and guidelines in place, political conversations can sometimes escalate into conflict.  Business owners and managers should be prepared to step in and address these situations immediately.  The focus should be on the behavior involved rather than the specific opinions being discussed.

The goal isn’t to silence political views but to ensure that the workplace remains a respectful environment.  If conflicts arise, remind employees of the company’s policies on professional communication and encourage open-mindedness and understanding.

Leadership Sets the Tone

Leaders play a pivotal role in setting the tone for political conversations in the workplace.  Business owners and managers must lead by example, maintaining neutrality in political matters during work hours and ensuring that their personal beliefs don’t influence the workplace culture.

Although it’s natural for leaders to hold personal political views, they should focus on creating an environment where all employees feel respected and valued, regardless of differing opinions.  This helps reinforce a culture where business priorities come first and political disagreements don’t interfere with workplace harmony.

Stay Focused on Business Priorities

Ultimately, the workplace should be a place where employees come together around shared goals, not divided by politics.  By creating respectful communication policies, equipping employees with conflict-avoidance strategies, and addressing issues as they arise, business owners and managers can maintain a positive and productive work environment.

As the election season intensifies, now is the time to set expectations for political conversations in your workplace—fostering both respect and productivity.  For advice on employment policies contact Tracy Aparo, eGage Human Resources & Safety Consulting, at tracyaparo@egage.net or Allie Levene, Employment Attorney, at allie@levenelegal.com.
